Sunday, April 29 : 35 volunteer Connell School of Nursing students and faculty participated in a "Day of Service" at the Greater Boston Food Bank.  The event was organized by the CSON Student Senate under the direction of Meghan Crann (class of '08) and Margy Burke and 2007 Class President Jean Reidy, who was recently recognized for her leadership by the University. The Day of Service was originally concieved as a way to bring all four classes and some faculty together to do service outside of the hospital setting. Among the participants were 23 students from all four classes, along with Associate Professor Dianne Hagen joined us as well.

During the students' time at the Food Bank the students were able to make a significant contribution. Their accomplishments include salvaging and sorting over 5,133 pounds of food for local shelters, and making 3,948 meals possible for those in need in the greater Boston area. On average, our CSON volunteers contributed to sorting through 146 pounds of food per person as well as making 112 meals possible through their efforts.

"We hoped the event would foster community within our school as a whole," Jean Reidy reflects ", and we also thought it was a great way to spend a Sunday morning! Our hope is that it continues and expands each year until it is an established tradition."
