Project TALCA - Teaching Academic Language in the Content Areas: Enhancing Achievement for English Language Learners

With a five-year $1.49 million Title III National Professional Development Program grant, BC's LSOE has built a program designed to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers to work effectively with bilingual learners/English language learners (ELLs).  Efforts in years 1 and 2 focused on the creation of training materials designed to help teachers deliver effective literacy instruction to bilingual learners/ELLs.  In years 3-5, grant work with faculty, students and area teachers has focused on effective ways to teach academic language in content areas that enables bilingual learners/ELLs to achieve at higher levels in math, science and social studies.  Project TALCA concludes in academic year 2011-12.  Click for more information on this grant's objectives.

TELL Certificate Program

The TELL certificate program is designed to help teachers meet current Massachusetts state guidance on the preparation of teachers qualified to teach ELLs by addressing the four categories outlined by the state.  For more information link to http://www.doe.mass.edu/ell/guidance_
