The major in Human Development prepares students for work in social and community service and/or for graduate study in counseling, human development, educational psychology, and related fields. The curriculum offers a theoretical base in developmental and counseling psychology with a focus on understanding psychological processes in context.
Students in Human Development have obtained employment in educational, human service, and business settings. A practicum experience provides students with an opportunity to develop important professional skills and explore career opportunities. The 10-course major gives a strong background in the area of developmental psychology and an introduction to the field of counseling.
Human Development students are required to carry a minor of six courses in a single subject in A&S, a major or an interdisciplinary minor in A&S, or a second major or interdisciplinary major in the Lynch School.
Students majoring in Human Development choose to concentrate their upper level courses in one of these focus areas:
- human services
- organizational studies
- community advocacy and social policy
Human Development/Social Work: B.A. M.S.W.
The Lynch School of Education and the Graduate School of Social Work offer an Accelerated B.A./M.S.W. Program whereby a limited number of Human Development Majors may begin the Social Work foundation courses during their junior and senior years and receive the B.A. at the end of four years and the M.S.W. after the fifth year.
Students must meet all standard requirements for admission to the Graduate School of Social Work and enroll in as final-year M.S.W. candidates for their fifth year.
