Claire Geruson, LSOE '13 Honored with Finnegan Award
The recipient of the Rev. Edward H. Finnegan, S.J. Award for the Class of 2013 is Lynch School student Claire Geruson. Winning the Rev. Edward Finnegan, SJ, Award is the ultimate honor for a Boston College senior, given annually to the senior who exemplifies the University's motto "Ever to Excel."
Claire is graduating with honors this year with her B.A. in Elementary Education and Theology. Throughout her four years at Boston College she volunteered in the Campus School, served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector for Campus Ministry, and worked on the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) project with Lynch School Professor Richard Jackson.
Claire spent her fall semester junior year studying in El Salvador where she completed a student teaching practicum at the Casa del Cipote School and this past January she returned to El Salvador leading a group of her fellow students on an Arrupe immersion trip. She was also a student teacher at St. Columbkille’s Partnership School in Brighton and did her full teaching practicum at the Jackson Mann School in Allston.
“In all of her teaching and service work whether in El Salvador, at home in Pennsylvania, or here in Boston, [Claire] has consistently pursued the Ignatian ideal of being a true woman for others,” said Audrey Friedman, associate director of undergraduate student services. “Her warm infectious smile, spiritual nature, and genuine compassion readily assure everyone she meets that she is there to help them make a real difference in their lives.”
There are only four candidates for the Finnegan Award each year, each nominated by the Dean of the student’s undergraduate school, and from these four a single recipient is chosen.
Father Edward Finnegan was a graduate of Boston College and a beloved professor in the History department, as well as the senior class advisor. Upon his death in 1951, his former students established a memorial award in his honor. The Finnegan Award is the only all-university award, and it is bestowed upon the recipient by the President of Boston College at Commencement. The name of each recipient is also added to a bronze plaque on display in O’Connell Hall.
