APA honors Lykes with International Humanitarian Award
In the 25 years since she first traveled to Argentina and Guatemala as a scholar-activist, Professor M. Brinton Lykes has devoted her career to helping people transform trauma and displacement into self-empowerment. She has witnessed not only the aftermath of human atrocities, but what she calls “people’s continuing desire to speak truth to violence.” This summer, the American Psychological Association will recognize Lykes’ sustained and enduring service to underserved populations and honor her many contributions to international psychology with its 2013 International Humanitarian Award. STEM research takes root
Few issues have the power to unite educators, policymakers, and politicians from both sides of the aisle quite so much as the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math education. In recent years, solid training in the so-called STEM fields has been hailed as a vital engine of economic growth in the midst of a weak economy, a ticket out of poverty for students in low-income areas, and more. Introducing the fourth way to the American Northwest
Professors Dennis Shirley and Andy Hargreaves will build and lead a communication network for rural schools in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, thanks to a five-year, $500,000 grant from Education Northwest, a regional education, research, and consulting group funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education. Faculty news
Patricia Weitzel-O’Neill, executive director at the Roche Center for Catholic Education, discussed the center’s work on the Innovation Institute—a partnership with the National Catholic Educational Association that develops novel programs for Catholic schools, including new approaches to bilingual education—on K-12 Education Talk Radio.
Ana Martínez Alemán was promoted to full professor and Heather Rowan-Kenyon is now an associate professor with tenure.
Alumni notes
Matthew Malone, M.Ed. ’95, Ph.D. ’02, was appointed Massachusetts Secretary of Education by Governor Deval Patrick.
Anne Collins, Ph.D. ’02, received the Nadine Bezuk Excellence in Leadership and Service Award at the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators annual conference. She is currently an associate professor at Lesley University.

Celebrate the Lynch School of Education's 60th anniversary. Thomas More Brennan Chair Andrew Hargreaves and Professor Dennis Shirley will speak on the state of K-12 education across the globe and strategies that may influence educational practice in the United States.
A reception will follow.
