Sherman Given "Woman of Excellence" Award

Newton, MA--BC Law Clinical Professor Francine Sherman, Director of the School’s Juvenile Rights Advocacy Project, has been named one of three “Women of Excellence” by the Germaine Lawrence residential treatment program. Sherman will be honored at the program’s 9th annual Women of Excellence breakfast, to be held on November 4, 2010 at the Harvard Club in Boston. Attorney General Martha Coakley will be Mistress of Ceremonies.

Francine Sherman is a Clinical Professor at Boston College Law School where she has been teaching Juvenile Justice for the past twenty years. She founded and directs the Juvenile Rights Advocacy Project, a law clinic in which upper level law students provide supervised representation and related policy work for youth in the justice system. She teaches law students the skills and sensitivity to provide legal advocacy to girls in trouble. She speaks and writes widely about the juvenile justice system and, in particular, about girls in the justice system. She has testified before Congress on issues related to the detention of girls and is a local, state and national voice for prevention, diversion and treatment alternatives for girls in the justice system.
