BC Law Announces Public Service Scholarships

Newton, MA--Boston College Law School is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's public service scholarships.

Drinan Family Fund Award: Henry Bouchet

The Drinan Family Fund awards $20,000 over two years to a graduating student who will pursue a public sector career.

Henry Bouchot has been very active in the Law School with the Veterans’ Law Group, LALSA, and as the LSA Community Service Co-Chair organizing the Grads Give Back Day and the BC Law races. He also mentors a young boy and has been a very dedicated advocate in the Criminal Law (Defender) Clinic.

Sharon Beckman writes, “During his three years at BC Law, Henry has done more public service, and has done more to promote public service by other graduate students, than anyone else I know. By virtue of his charismatic, empathetic, and collaborative leadership, I believe he has done more to promote mutual understanding and public service in the B.C. Law community than any student leader I have ever known.” After Graduation, Henry is committed to re-join the U.S. Marines as a Judge Advocate.

Edward T. Bigham Award: Elizabeth Sheetz


The Edward T. Bigham III Scholarship was established in memory of Edward T. Bigham, III, (BC '75, BC Law '78) who served as an Assistant District Attorney in Massachusetts. This year's recipient is Elizabeth Sheetz, who will join the Manhattan District Attorney's Office following graduation. Elizabeth also provided more than 1300 hours of pro bono work with the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.



The Keefe Family Scholarship - Nadia Ben-Youssef

 

The Robert S. Pitcoff Memorial Scholarship - Sean Smith

 

The David H. and Mary Murphy Posner Law Scholarship- Claire Urban

 

These three scholarships are for current third-year students who have a demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in the public sector.

Nadia Ben-Youssef is committed to a career in the human rights arena working to reform social structures in the developing world. She will be working internationally for the next four years. During law school, Nadia interned with the BC Legal Assistance Bureau, The Cherie Blair Foundation for Women (through the London Program), the World Organization for Human Rights USA, Physicians for Human Rights, and the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre in New Delhi. She has served as a three year executive board member of the Holocaust/Human Right Project and as a founding member of our Amnesty International Chapter.

Sean Smith plans to join the Committee for Public Counsel Services ("CPCS") as a Public Defender in the Fall Sean has been very involved with the Immigration Spring Break trips (he went as a leader both his 2L and 3L years) and has provided more than 700 hours of pro bono service to organizations including CPCS.

Claire Urban plans to purse a career in immigration law. In the fall she will begin clerking for the Immigration Unit of the Staff Attorneys’ Office at the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. At BC Law, Claire has been very active with PILF, as a 1L representative, the treasurer ,and now as the PILF summer stipends coordinator.

Champy Scholarship (2L): Kate Billman-Golemme



The Lois and James Champy (BC Law '68) Scholarship is for an outstanding second-year student who has demonstrated the intention and ability to work in the public interest. The Champy Fellowship is a scholarship of $10,000 that is paid during the student’s third year of law school.

Kate Billman-Golemme will work in direct legal services this summer as a law clerk at the Fair Employment Project, Inc. During her 1L summer, Kate was selected as a Rappaport Fellow and worked at the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development. At BC Law, Kate has been active with PILF and the Environmental Affairs Law Review and on the Board of Student Advisors where she Co-Chaired the Negotiation Competition. Before law school, Kate worked as a Victim Witness Advocate at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, where she received the Outstanding Advocate Award.
