BC Law Adds Three New Faculty

2/26/07 - Boston College Law School is pleased to announce three new additions to its full-time faculty: Maritza Karmely, David Olson and Vlad Perju.
Maritza Karmely joins Boston College Law School from a position as Staff Attorney at Casa Myrna Vazquez in Boston, where she represented women, including many immigrant women, in various legal matters, including especially matters concerning domestic violence. Before working at Casa Myrna Vazquez, Professor Karmely was an Associate for six years with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Boston, where she specialized in litigation while also devoting considerable time to numerous pro bono matters. Professor Karmely's scholarly interests include matters of domestic violence, human rights and immigration. Professor Karmely holds a B.S. in Economics from Boston College and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law. At BC Law School, Professor Karmely will teach in the Civil Litigation Clinic.
David Olson joins Boston College Law School from a position as Resident Fellow at the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford University Law School, where he conducted research on business method patents, subject matter patentability, the law and economics of the U.S. patent system and international regulation of intellectual property. Before pursuing this research at Stanford, Professor Olson was an Associate for five years at Kirkland & Ellis in New York and San Francisco where he specialized in trademark and on patent cases concerning business methods and technology. Professor Olson's scholarly interests concentrate on patent law. Professor Olson holds a B.A. in Economics from University of Kansas and a J.D. from Harvard University Law School. Professor Olson also served as Clerk for The Honorable Jerry E. Smith, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. At BC Law School, Professor Olson will teach Intellectual Property Survey and Patent Law.
Vlad Perju joins Boston College Law School, from his current position as Visiting Assistant Professor during the 2006-07 year, having previously been a Fellow at the Program on Justice, Welfare & Economics and the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics, both at Harvard University Law School, where he conducted research leading to his doctoral dissertation on the foundations of constitutional authority in pluralist societies. Professor Perju's scholarly interests include constitutional law, jurisprudence, comparative constitutionalism, European law and law in political and social theory. Professor Perju holds first law degrees from University of Bucharest and the Sorbonne and advanced law degrees from Harvard as well as a Masters from the European Academy of Legal Theory (Brussels). At BC Law School, Professor Perju will teach European Union Law and Constitutional Law II.
All three will start teaching classes in the fall 2007 semester.
