National Moot Court Team Wins Regionals
11/20/06--Boston College Law School's National Moot Court Team took first
place in the New England Regional Competition, held last week. The team, composed
of Robert Frederickson, Stuart Leslie, and Katherine Weiss, with Lauren Regis,
went 4-0, prevailing twice as petitioner and twice as respondent, and winning
every argument over two days of competition.
“Congratulations to Katie, Robbie, Stu, and Lauren for getting the advocacy
year off to a roaring start,” said Director of Advocacy Programs Thomas
Carey. “[Team Advisor] Frank Herrmann and I are thrilled with their performance,
and can’t wait to see how they do in the next round.”
In the final round of regionals the team argued before Justice Ireland from
the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, Justice Robinson from the Supreme
Court of Rhode Island, and Justice Elspeth Cypher from the Massachusetts Appeals
Court.
Robby Frederickson won the best speaker award for the entire competition. Each
member of the team received a bronze medallion representing the Justice Lewis
F. Powell Award from the American College of Trial Lawyers.
The National Moot Court Competition consists of two rounds of arguments, the
regionals and the finals. The U.S. is divided into fourteen regions; within
each region a sponsor designated by the Competition Committee conducts regional
rounds for the law schools located within that region. Teams that qualify in
the regional rounds are eligible to enter the final rounds.
This year’s BC Law team advances, along with other law schools from the
fourteen regions, to the National Championship Rounds, to be held at the House
of the Bar of the City of New York in January.
