PILF Auction Moves Downtown
april 18, 2007--boston college club
Going once, going twice… sold! A pie in the face of the Law Review
editor to the student in the maroon and gold t-shirt!
10/28/06--Each
year, the Law School’s Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) Auction enables
Boston College Law students to share their talents with organizations around
the country in an effort to further the common good. Once again, it is currently
recruiting season at BC Law. Although what comes to mind for many law students
and alumni alike is recruiting at law firms around the country, many students
choose instead to work for public interest organizations, legal aid societies,
and the government. The tricky part, however, is that every intern needs to
eat, and pay rent, and public interest internships often are unpaid. Enter the
familiar sounds of the PILF Auction.
For the past nineteen years, the money raised through the PILF auction has allowed
students to take summer internships with the Legal Aid Society, the National
Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Public Defenders’ offices and many
more organizations without having to worry whether they will be able to support
themselves. Recent alumni may recall with fondness the hopping on-campus event
that draws students and faculty to bid on prizes ranging from the delicious
(Professor Shear’s Naked People Cookies) to the luxurious (a weekend for
ten on Cape Cod). The auction is PILF’s most lucrative fundraising activity,
generating over $30,000 last spring – enough money to fund approximately
40 summer stipends.

This year, Auction Chairs Adam Baker and Toni Ann Kruse are taking the auction
for a swankier ride, and you are cordially invited to come along. In an effort
to double the revenue raised by the event, the auction is moving downtown from
the Newton Campus Snack Bar to the Boston College Club. The Club is a beautiful
space with panoramic views of Boston where alumni will be able to reconnect
with former classmates, converse with current students, and judge the auctioneering
chops of some of our favorite professors. PILF is thrilled to bring the auction
to the alumni community as a means of keeping you connected and of expanding
the law school’s public interest mission.
As part of this expansion, the auction this year will honor esteemed alumnus
John “Jack” Curtin, Jr. ’57, founder of the law school’s
Mary Daly Curtin and John J. Curtin Jr. Center for Public Interest. Mr. Curtin,
Partner at Bingham McCutchen, LLP is a long-time champion of public interest
whose commitment to serving others has not gone unnoticed; he was a recipient
of The American Lawyer 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. PILF is delighted that
Mr. Curtin will be in attendance to see how public interest thrives at BC Law.
So
please save the date of April 18, 2007 for a night of fun and friendship. Come
to catch up with former classmates, participate in a significant community event,
and witness the passion for public service that drives so many students to set
the world aflame.
