Gulf Coast Students May Apply as Visitors

Boston College Law School has banded together with a number of other schools across the country to offer students from the law schools at Tulane and Loyola a place to visit for the fall semester. The schools are coordinating this effort with assistance from the American Bar Association (ABA) and the Association of American Law Schools (AALS). For more information on this effort, including information about applying to visit at BC Law and at other law schools participating in this program, see the AALS website here.

The Katrina Tragedy: A Message from the Dean
All of us here at the Law School are deeply saddened by the tragic events surrounding Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast. We extend our sympathies to those in the hurricane’s path, and condolences to those who have lost homes and family.

This tragedy is an opportunity for those of us who are safe to extend a helping hand. I would like to briefly let everyone know what Boston College Law School is doing to offer assistance.

We have opened our doors to students from the law schools at Tulane and Loyola, to visit at BC Law for the fall semester (for more information on this effort, visit the AALS website). The deans and staff have been busy formulating emergency plans for these students, which will include brief orientation sessions on Tuesday, September 6, and Friday, September 9. The Law School will do this tuition-free, with the understanding that the students will continue to pay tuition at their home institutions.

We are currently gathering information from people in the BC Law community who are willing to help these incoming students as they arrive. If current BC Law students, faculty and staff would like to offer assistance, either with orientation programs, or with places to live for the semester, please contact Dean for Students Norah Wylie at wylien@bc.edu.

In addition, if you know of anyone from the BC Law community who may be affected by this disaster, please let Norah know.

Finally, the American Red Cross, along with other organizations, is now taking donations to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The AALS has put together a very helpful list of other non-profit organizations where you can donate to help the relief effort. It is located here.

I hope you will join me in welcoming the students from New Orleans whom we will be hosting this semester. I will find an occasion to introduce them once they arrive.

Sincerely,
John H. Garvey
