4/28/05—Boston College Law School is pleased to announce that Joyce Dalrymple has been selected as the 2005 Champy Fellowship award winner. The Lois and James Champy Fellowship Fund provides a $9,000 scholarship for the third year of law school to a financially needy student who has demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a public interest career.

“I am so honored and grateful to receive the Champy Fellowship – made possible by the generous contribution of Lois and James Champy,” Joyce said. “The fellowship will support my pursuit of providing direct legal services to asylum seekers, trafficked individuals, and low-income immigrants.”

Joyce has served as a legal intern at the Boston College Immigration & Asylum Project, where she prepared clients to testify at trial, wrote legal memos, and investigated facts to corroborate testimonies. She also worked as a legal intern at Catholic Charities Immigration / Refugee Unit, where she interviewed clients, prepared affidavits, researched country conditions, and wrote a joint motion to reopen for an asylum application, and prepared family petitions.

During the summer of 2004, she interned for Georgia State Judge Janis Gordon, where she researched misdemeanor crimes and drafted judicial orders; developed and maintained a database for judge’s opinions; compiled resources for recovery, rehabilitation, and educational programs. Prior to entering law school, she worked as a communications officer for the American Anti-Slavery Group in Boston.

The Champy Fellowship Program
Thanks to the generous contribution of Lois and James Champy (BC Law ‘68) the Champy Fellowship Program provides financial support to an outstanding second-year student who has demonstrated the intention and ability to work in the public interest and who is in need of financial assistance. Any second-year student pursuing a public interest career is eligible, though preference is given to students providing direct legal services to the disadvantaged and/or working in civil or human rights. The Champy Fellow receives a $9,000 scholarship in two disbursements during the third year of law school, which is to be used to pay educational expenses.
