New Academic Dean Appointed

2/04/05--Boston College Law School Dean John H. Garvey has announced the appointment of Professor Lawrence Cunningham to the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Cunningham will replace Professor George Brown, who has held the position for the past two years. Cunningham will assume his duties on June 15, 2005.

“Larry is a widely respected teacher and scholar, and has the trust and affection of faculty, staff, and students,” said BC Law Dean John H. Garvey. “I’d like to thank him for his extraordinary commitment to Boston College Law School.”

Lawrence Cunningham is currently a Professor of Law and Business and Libby Scholar at Boston College Law School. He is an active academic in the field of law, having written half-dozen books and nearly two-dozen scholarly articles. Prior to entering teaching, he practiced corporate law with Cravath, Swaine, & Moore in New York. He has served as a consultant to corporate boards of directors, law and accounting firms, and regulatory and standard-setting bodies and has given expert witness testimony in matters concerning corporate and securities law, as well as ethics and valuation. He was Director of the Independence Standards Board’s Task Force on Alternative Practice Structures of Auditors from 1998 to 2001 and a Member of the Securities Regulation Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

Professor Cunningham has been featured in Forbes and Money and on CNN, CNBC, and The Motley Fool Radio Show. He has been a guest on The News Hour with Jim Lehrer and has appeared on or been quoted in scores of other broadcast and print media.

As the new Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor Cunningham will work with the Dean and faculty in areas of curriculum review, program development, faculty appointment, and research, and will oversee the delivery of academic services to students.

Professor Brown will remain at the Law to teach Corporations and Federal Criminal Law in Spring 2005, followed by a faculty fellowship in Spring 2006. “I cannot thank him enough for the important contributions he has made to the service of our faculty, the smooth functioning of our academic affairs, the management of Academic Services, the considerate handling of students’ concerns, and the cultivation of our alumni,” said Dean Garvey.
