Jack Bogle to Deliver "Landmark" Speech
Newton, MA—Boston College Law School is pleased to announce that Jack
Bogle, Founder of Vanguard Group and current President of Bogle Financial Markets
Research Center, will speak at the School on January 21, 2004, in East Wing
115, beginning at 4 p.m. Those close to Bogle have promised a significant talk
that will discuss the history of the mutual fund industry, the recent scandals,
and possible solutions.
“Jack Bogle is a legend in the investment business,” said BC Law
Dean John H. Garvey. “But what I think makes him particularly special
is that he has never forgotten the individual investor, and has fought constantly
for a level playing field for everyone, and for corporate controls and honesty
in accounting. This is particularly important considering the recent scandals
in the industry. I look forward to hearing what he has to say.”
BC Law Professor Larry Cunningham, who was instrumental in bringing Bogle to
speak at the School, is calling the upcoming speech a "landmark" talk
of major significance. “He will examine the history of the mutual fund
industry, born in Boston and witnessing its 80th anniversary this year,”
Cunningham said. “He'll include some historical perspective on Vanguard.
The talk will include critique of the current shape of the industry, including
the pending scandals and what to do about them.”
John C. Bogle created Vanguard in 1974 and served as Chairman through 1997 and
Senior Chairman through 1999. He had been associated with a predecessor company
