Professor Goldberg to Speak at BC Law

4/2/03-- The Task Force on Military Recruiting and Nondiscrimination Policies and the BC Law American Constitution Society are pleased to welcome Professor Suzanne Goldberg to campus on Wednesday, April 9. Professor Goldberg, a former Senior Staff Attorney to the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund (1993--2000), will discuss the recent case Garner v. Texas (heard by the U.S. Supreme Court on March 26), as well as her paper "Equality Without Tiers."

"We are thrilled to host a lawyer and legal scholar of Professor Goldberg's caliber," said Professor Alan Minuskin, Chair of the Task Force on Military Recruiting and Nondiscrimination Policies. "As a voice for social justice, both in practice and in the academy, Professor Goldberg has captured the attention of constitutional scholars and jurists by making the case for more principled ways of understanding and honoring our society's commitment to equal protection. We are particularly fortunate to be able to hear from Professor Goldbeg at this point in legal history, as we await Supreme Court rulings in the Lawrence [Texas Sodomy statute] and Grutter [University of Michigan admissions policies] cases."

Professor Goldberg earned an A.B. in political science magna cum laude from Brown University. Following graduation, she was a Fulbright Fellow performing postgraduate political science research on women and public policy at the National University of Singapore. In 1990, she received her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School, then served as law clerk to New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Marie Garibaldi. Professor Goldberg then joined the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund as a Skadden Foundation Fellow in 1991. She served as senior staff attorney at Lambda from 1993 until 2000, when she joined the Rutgers faculty. She has published several articles in the areas of gay rights, workplace rights, and international human rights, and co-authored the book Strangers to the Law: Gay People on Trial. In addition to teaching and research, Professor Goldberg directs Rutgers’ Women’s Rights Litigation Clinic.

Professor Goldberg recently won the annual Scholarly Papers Competition sponsored by the Association of American Law Schools for her entry "Equality Without Tiers", which is forthcoming in 57 U. Miami L. Rev. (2003).

The talk will take place on Wednesday, April 9, from 12:05-1:20 p.m., in room 200 of the East Wing building. Pizza and soda will be served.
