Ambassador Egan at BC Law April 2
3/24/03--Boston College Law School is pleased to welcome the United States
Ambassador to Ireland Richard J. Egan to the Law School campus on April 2, 2003.
As the founder of EMC Corporation, Ambassador Egan will be discussing how to
succeed in American business today. As a United States Ambassador and former
United States marine helicopter chief in the Korean War, Ambassador Egan will
also offer an inside perspective on the War in Iraq and Americas larger
War on Terrorism.
"Anyone who wants to better understand what it takes to succeed in the
business world will benefit by learning from one of the most successful businessmen
in America today," said Larry Cunningham, a BC Law Professor of Law and
Business. "Im very pleased that he has agreed to come speak with
us."
Ambassador Egan was born in Milton, Massachusetts. Following the Marine Corps,
he went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.
He commenced graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
and subsequently joined MITs Draper Laboratory as part of the team that
developed the Apollo Guidance Computer. Ambassador Egan continued his business
career with NASA, Lockheed Aircraft and Intel Corporation.
In 1979, Ambassador Egan founded EMC, starting with six employees. EMC Enterprise
Storage systems, software products, and services are the leading information
access and storage solutions for every major computing platform. The company
employs more than 20,000 worldwide and has manufacturing and design centers
in Massachusetts, Colorado, North Carolina, Belgium, Ireland and Israel.
Ambassador Egan is a dynamic leader in the educational, business and high-tech
communities, having served as Director of the Massachusetts High Technology
Council and Business Roundtable, Director of the New York Stock Exchange Advisory
Board, and founder of the Hopkinton Technology for Education Foundation.
He has received honorary degrees from Northeastern University and the New England
Institute of Technology. In 1994, Inc. Magazine named him "Master Entrepreneur
of the Year", he was the 2001 recipient of the Medal of Honor Societys
Patriot Award and he has been one of Irish America Magazines "Top
100" for the past several years.
In addition to his private sector and high tech leadership, Ambassador Egan
has been an active member of his community. His major philanthropic activities
include improvement of schools and universities, support to health care institutions,
and assistance to the community on dozens of the other issues.
Ambassador Egan will speak on April 2 at 12:30 p.m. in the Law Schools
East Wing Building, room 115B. His appearance is sponsored by the Republicans
