Mock Trial Competition Winners
11/21/02--The final round of Boston College Law School’s 26th annual Mock
Trial Competition was held on November 20, 2002. The internal competition featured
the Honorable Paul J. Barbadoro, Chief Judge, United States District Court,
New Hampshire, presiding. BC Law students Christine Daly, Matthew Foye, Eugenia
LaFontaine and Nicholas O'Donnell participated as teams representing the plaintiff
and defendant, with the team of Daly/Foye prevailing by one point in a closely
contested match.
"Judge Barbadero declared it a very well fought final battle," said
Director of Advocacy Programs Alexis Anderson. "I'm very pleased with our
students' efforts. Both teams have been invited to represent the school in the
national competition."
The problem used in the intra-school competition alternates each year between
a civil and a criminal case. This year it was a criminal case titled Commonwealth
of Grimes v.Jackie Danford. Students compete as two-person teams and represent
either the plaintiff or the defendant at trial. Each trial includes an opening
statement by each party, the direct and cross-examination of two witnesses for
the plaintiff and two witnesses for the defendant, with closing arguments by
each party.
Commonwealth of Grimes v.Jackie Danford dealt with a case of assault
and battery; a woman had pressed charges against her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend,
accusing her of entering their home and punching her, kicking her and cutting

As a result of the competition’s success, both regionally and nationally,
the Law School has developed an outstanding reputation for preparing students
who will be hired for litigation positions in both major law firms and public
law practices.
