Dean Garvey Addresses US Court of Appeals Judges

10/28/02--BC Law is pleased to announce that Dean John H. Garvey was invited to participate at the recent Federal Judicial Center’s Symposium for Court of Appeals Judges held in Washington, DC on October 21st and 22nd, 2002. Dean Garvey spoke for about 30 minutes to a crowd that included approximately 150 judges from the United States Court of Appeals. Chief Justice Rehnquist opened the program, and Justices Stevens and O’Connor also addressed the crowd.

Dean Garvey’s remarks, titled "Shifting Into Neutral," dealt with recent trends in the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence concerning the First Amendment--specifically the trend toward the ideal of neutrality. Professor Lawrence Tribe from Harvard Law School shared the subject and 90 minute time slot with Dean Garvey. After the lecture, half an hour was spent on comments and questions, which a court of appeals judge monitored.

The Federal Judicial Center reproduced written materials from the symposium in a bound volume for the judges, and posted the materials on the judiciary’s intranet site.
