Professor Rudnick Dies in Tragic Accident
8/30/01-Boston College Law School Visiting Professor Rebecca S. Rudnick was drowned on June 2 in a tragic boating accident in Papua New Guinea. Professor Rudnick had been visiting at BCLaw during the spring 2001 semester, teaching Taxation and Partnership Taxation.
"We will really miss Rebecca," said BC Law Dean John H. Garvey. "She was a warm and talented woman who contributed a lot to Boston College in her brief time here. Our prayers go out to her family and friends."
Professor Rudnick was an authority on tax law, the author of numerous papers on the subject as well as a member of many tax organizations. She practiced tax law in New York City with Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts and served in government as special counsel to the New York State Legislative Tax Study Commission and Professor-in-Residence in the office of Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service. She taught at a number of American law schools since 1985, including Indiana University-Bloomington (1985-1994), University of Pennsylvania, Boston University, Tulane University, University of Kentucky, and Seattle University.
Professor Rudnick has participated in legislative drafting and advising on developing and transition economy tax laws as a headquarters-based consultant for the International Monetary Fund and as a consultant to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.
Professor Rudnick was raised in Bakersfield, CA, received her J.D. from the University of Texas, and her B.A. from Willamette University. She served as law clerk to the Hon. Charles Schwartz, Jr., U.S. District Judge for the E.D. of Louisiana, and was a member of the New York, California, Texas, and Louisiana bars. She is survived by her husband, Robert Anthoine, also a tax attorney who frequently taught with her, and 8 half-brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be scheduled in New York in September.
