Author Judith Isaacson to Speak

4/12/01--Dr. Judith Magyar Isaacson, Holocaust survivor and author of "Seed of Sarah: Memoirs of a Survivor," will read from her much-acclaimed book and discuss her experiences as a survivor of the Holocaust at a lecture at Boston College Law School. The lecture is sponsored by the Jewish Law Students’ Association (JLSA) and will occur on Thursday, April 19, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., in the East Wing building, Room 115. Admission is free.

Isaacson’s childhood in Hungary turned into one of pain and suffering when in 1944, thousands of Hungary’s Jews were transported to Auschwitz. Many Jews died in the journey; more were killed upon arrival. But the 19-year-old Isaacson, her mother and her aunt miraculously survived, only to be transported to another concentration camp where they were enslaved and made to work for the Nazi war effort. Her father and uncles were never seen again, nor were many of her closest friends. Despite these cruelties, Isaacson preserved her marvelous joy in life. Her memoir is an inspiring account of a remarkable young woman’s coming of age in a horrible place and time.

Isaacson is a former dean at Bates College in Maine. Her memoir "Seed of Sarah: Memoirs of a Survivor" has been a bestseller and is published by the University of Illinois Press. Isaacson’s lecture is the highlight of a series of activities sponsored by JLSA throughout the week to educate the Boston College Law School community about the Holocaust and observe Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, which falls on April 20.
