Enrollment
in the Law School dropped precipitously during the years of World War II. Although
the school remained open, little monies were coming in and the rent in the New
England Power Building was burdensome. In late 1945 the school moved to smaller
quarters in the Kimball Building at 18 Tremont Street. There was little room
for the library’s collection and many volumes remained boxed until the
Law School’s move to the Chestnut Hill campus in 1954.
St. Thomas More Hall on the Chestnut Hill campus was the location of the Law
School from 1954 – 1975. The first permanent home of the Law School was
dedicated in a ceremony conducted by Cardinal Richard J. Cushing on September
27, 1954. The library occupied the entire Commonwealth Avenue wing of the building
and contained generous stack space and seating for 200. It was named in honor
of attorney Thomas J. Kenny, a generous financial contributor to the school.
