Kuo-Shuen Chao - LL.M., 2010

ll.m. alumni profiles

Kuo-Shuen Chao

Associate, Baker & McKenzie, Taipei, Taiwan.  LL.M., National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan.  LL.B., National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan.

“Unlike LL.M. programs with hundreds of students who rarely see their teachers, the Boston College LL.M. was a warm and collegial experience.  In the academic area, Professor Hupper focused so much on helping her students understand a new legal system.  She’s also a terrific career counselor – she probably spent more time on our resumes than we did ourselves!  And Nayla, our best-ever LL.M. Administrative Assistant, was always there for us.  Her joy and warmth made it easy to settle into a new environment, and she organized amazing activities for us (apple-picking, a barbecue, etc.).  In all, BC Law made me understand not only American law but also real American life.  For me, it was not just a school; it was the best year in my life.”

Kuo-Shuen Chao is currently an intellectual property associate in the Taipei office of a leading international law firm.  Before coming to BC Law, she was an attorney at Lo & Partners in Taipei, focusing on intellectual property law, and a research assistant to a judge of the Taipei District Court. Her long-term goals include helping Taiwanese companies develop better legal brand-protection strategies, in order to enhance their ability to participate in world markets.

In addition to her LL.B. degree from National Taiwan University, Kuo-Shuen holds an LL.M. in technology law from National Chiao Tung University.  While there, she worked as a research and teaching assistant to several professors and wrote an award-winning thesis on conflicts with well-known trademarks owned by foreign investors in China.  She is a person of almost limitless energy and enthusiasm:  throughout her studies she has also organized seminars, publicized student events, edited student newspapers, etc.  Ms. Chao’s BC Law coursework focused primarily on intellectual property and corporate law.
