GSSW Center Director Presents at Congressional Briefing

Kevin J. Mahoney

FEBRUARY 24, 2011

GSSW Professor Kevin J. Mahoney presented at the Congressional Briefing on "The Implications of Health Care Reform for the Social Work Profession" on February 16, 2011, in Washington, DC. Mahoney, director of the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work's National Resource Center for Participant-Directed Services, spoke on participant direction as a theme in health care reform with major import for the social work profession.

Participant-directed services, also referred to as consumer-directed or self-directed services, are long-term care services that help people of all ages, and across all types of disabilities, to maintain their independence and determine for themselves what mix of personal care services and supports works best for them. New health care reforms and provisions in the Affordable Care Act will fuel a paradigm shift towards participant-direction.
