"Outstanding Scholar in Adoption" Awarded to Professor Ruth McRoy

GSSW Alum Featured in the Boston Globe

Peter Ducharme, MSW '08, was featured in the Boston Globe for his work with a video game prototype used in therapy to help children develop anger management skills.

Ducharme, a clinical social worker in the department of psychiatry at Children's Hospital Boston, is running the study. While playing the video game, trial patients wear a monitoring clip that allows them to succeed at the game only when their pulse dips below a resting rate. Ducharme teaches players deep breathing techniques that bring down their heart rates.

Doctoral Program Grad to Present at Paris Seminar in July

Rocio Calvo, PhD, GSSW doctoral program graduate and adjunct faculty member has been invited to attend the QMSS2 seminar in Paris in July. This seminar is organized to support research networks in quantitative social sciences. This seminar is small‐scale and attendance is based upon invitation only. In session I, Ms. Calvo will be presenting her paper entitled "Two Sides of the Same Coin? The Impact of the Welfare State on the Incorporation and Discrimination of Third Country Nationals in Europe."

A maximum of twelve papers were accepted, preferably written by young scholars. Ms. Calvo is currently doing her post-doc work at the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.

GSSW Visiting Scholar Receives Order of Australia Honor

Dr. Maryanne Loughry, RSM, associate director of the Jesuit Refugee Service in Australia and visiting research scholar at both the Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice and the Graduate School of Social Work, has been awarded the honor of AM (General member of the Order of Australia). The Order of Australia is the pre-eminent way Australians recognize the achievements and service of their fellow citizens. Dr. Loughry’s award was for her service to the community as an advocate for displaced persons and refugees.

Adjunct Faculty Member Receives Honorary Doctorate from Curry College

Suzin Bartley, executive director of Children's Trust Fund (CTF), recently received an honorary doctorate in public administration from Curry College. Ms. Bartley is a member of the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work Advisory Board and serves as an adjunct faculty member. As Executive Director of the Children's Trust Fund (CTF), Ms. Bartley oversees the organization's mission to prevent child abuse and neglect by strengthening families.

Professor Rowland to receive Louis Lowy Award

The Mass Gerontology Association will present Associate Professor Richard Rowland with the Louis Lowy Award at the Annual Meeting of the Association on May 6, 2010 at the Florence Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University. Professor Rowland teaches Macro Practice in the Older Adults & Families, Health and Mental Health Concentrations.

The Mass. Gerontology Association Louis Lowy Award was created in memory of Louis Lowy the founder of MGA. Louis Lowy was a pioneer in the gerontology field, a holocaust survivor and a long time professor at the Boston University School of Social Work. Dick Rowland was one of Professor Lowy's students at the BU School of Social Work.

The criteria for this award is a lifetime of leadership and measurable contributions to the field. "Dick not only teaches theory, practice, and programs, but also exposes his students to the actual workings of legislative bargaining and what it takes to be successful," said James J. Callahan, Ph.D., a Professor Emeritus from the Heller School at Brandeis University.

Dick Rowland started as an advocate for low-income populations during the Great Society years of the 1960s. He then went to work for the Mass Association of Older Americans and the Legislative Council of Older Americans as the association's person on Beacon Hill. In 1983, Governor Dukakis named him Secretary of Elder Affairs where he advocated for better programs for elders, increased financing for local councils of aging (grassroots), and higher salaries for the employees of home care agencies. He taught at UMASS Boston in a special program to educate older persons to be effective advocates in their own right.
