Keynote Address: "Spiritual Diversity in Social Work: The Heart of Helping"
The keynote address will be presented by Edward R. Canda, PhD, University of Kansas School of Social Welfare.
Dr. Canda studied the anthropology of religions, art, and art history as an undergraduate. He later received an MA in religious studies focusing on East Asian religions and comparative religions. Out of a desire to integrate interests in religious studies and social service, he then obtained MSW and PhD degrees at The Ohio State University (1980-1986) with a focus of study and practice on cross-cultural and spiritual issues.
Throughout his distinguished career as practitioner and scholar, Dr. Canda has been a welcome voice calling the profession to recognize the significance of spirituality for the clients and communities we serve.
Workshops
Breakout sessions will be offered following the keynote to explore the integration of spirituality and social work in specific settings and populations. 3 CEUs offered.

The schedule will include an opening presentation on the "Power of Social Innovation," an alumni reunion and luncheon, a liturgy with Boston College President William P. Leahy, S.J., a keynote with Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and a school reception.
Mark your calendar and plan to spend the day with us on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.
The BC GSSW Alumni Association invites you to participate in "Cleansweep," an opportunity for volunteers to collect and sort items that students have left behind in their dorms. Collected items are then made available to Greater Boston social service agencies.
Over 128 agencies serving everyone from single mothers, to children, families, veterans, the elderly, and the homeless, are given the opportunity to pick up the goods collected by Cleansweep volunteers.
Please RSVP to gsswalum@bc.edu by May 10th if you are able to attend so that we can plan to have enough pizza for everyone! Hope to see you there!
Alumni should meet Saturday morning at the McGuinn Hall lobby at 11:30 for check-in and pizza. At 12 noon everyone will report to their dormitory assignments.
Featuring the President of AARP, and BC Alum, Jennie Chin Hansen '70, as well as experts from the fields of theology, ministry, and health, this major new, day-long conference will address how the challenges of growing older are being re-defined by faith and service. The focus of the conference will be to identify and examine the different spiritual challenges that men and women encounter as they move into the second half of life and the unique resources faith offers to make this a time of deep purpose. Look for information on registration coming in January.

The Annual GSSW Alumni Event will be held Thursday, March 25th at the Yawkey Center. This year's event will be a little different than in year's past. Instead of an Alumni dinner we will be presenting a lecture by visiting scholar Maryanne Loughry Ph.D., Associate Director, Jesuit Refugee Service Australia on the topic of: "Refugees — Who is on the move?" An expose of the people moving in our global world—their stories and the problems they encounter.

Each year, the Boston College Graduate School of Social Work presents an award to an outstanding alumnus who has made a significant contribution to the practice of social work. In the past, winners have been honored for their role in social work education, contribution to social change, ability to enhance the profession in the larger community, and their support of Boston College's students and alumni.
Details of the award presentation event will be announced soon.
