Apply to the Doctoral Program
Boston College Graduate School of Social Work prepares its doctoral students with both the training and expertise to be the very best teachers, scholars, and researchers. Our research centers and internationally regarded faculty address the most pressing social welfare issues of the day.
Commitment to a research career in the field of social welfare or social work is expected. Preference is given to applicants with a master's degree in social work. However, those without a master's degree in the field of social work are encouraged to apply and consider the combined MSW/PhD option.
The doctoral program enrolls new students in the fall semester of each academic year. Enrollment is full time only with a two-year residency requirement.
Application Requirements:
All applicants must demonstrate a potential for doctoral studies by providing the following materials:
- Transcripts from all colleges and universities attended
- Resume
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of Purpose for seeking doctoral education
- Results of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
- Scores from TOEFL, if native language of country of origin is not English
- Writing sample

Interviews & Admissions Decisions
The doctoral admissions committee may request a personal interview as part of the application process. Applicants will be notified in writing as soon as possible regarding decisions on admission. The GSSW should be notified immediately of any change of plans or address after the application is submitted.
International Applicants
Boston College Graduate School of Social Work is proud to welcome students from all over the world. Recent incoming classes have included students from South Africa, Korea, Italy, and Palestine. Early application is necessary in order to meet deadlines for visa processing, travel and housing arrangements, and University orientation.
