Strategies, Gross Prospects, and the Importance of Convergence

The Chairman and Chief Executive of Vivendi Universal S.A., one of the world's largest media companies, told The Chief Executives Club of Boston luncheon audience that, now that the purchase of Boston based Houghton Mifflin publishing company is complete, his new media empire, rivaling competitors AOL Time Warner and Viacom, would focus on two emerging technologies, digital television and wireless technology. Both, he said, " are very far from their potential penetration."

Jean-Marie Messier, who recently moved his family from Paris to New York said that he was also hoping to increase the company's profile with the American investment community and build partnerships with US cable, broadcast, and satellite distributors. Messier also repeatedly emphasized the importance of convergence to Vivendi Universal: developing multimedia, multi-platform versions of core intellectual properties, from "Jurassic Park" to Curious George.

After his remarks, Messier was asked whether he planned to keep Houghton Mifflin in Boston. "That's an easy one," he replied. "Houghton Mifflin stays in Boston."
