Strategy & Execution for the Digital Renaissance

Speaking before an overflow audience at the Chief Executives' Club of Boston luncheon on Wednesday, September 27, Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer, Carly Fiorina said: "I didn't come here to talk about the past." In 14 months atop the world's second-biggest computer maker, and in almost 20 years as a telecommunicatoins executive before that, Fiorina has remained relentlessly focused on the future. Rather than focusing on products HP has long been known for, Fiorina is recasting the company for the Internet Age. She has trained the company's sights on dominating in three areas: information appliances, including desktop and handheld computers; Internet infrastructure such as high-end servers; and high-tech consulting services.

It's the consulting area that has received the most attention since Hewlett-Packard first confirmed two weeks ago that it was in merger talks with the consulting giant, PricewaterhouseCoopers. Fiorina said she is confident that the deal will be completed in the next four to six weeks and that Wall Street will see the logic of having a single company that can both identify and solve the corporate world's techonology problems. "We're entering a second renaissance, a digital renaissance, said the medieval history major, we have to be ready to do whatever it takes to be at the leading edge of that historical shift"
