Katie Pereira | Dean of Curriculum and Instruction, Excel Academy Orient Heights
After completing her undergraduate degree from Lesley University in 2004, Katie Pereira began her career in education as a middle school social studies teacher in rural Odessa, Missouri. During her time in the classroom, she completed a Master of Education for At-Risk Youth and Educational Leadership. After six years in the classroom she transitioned to being an instructional coach at a Pre-K to 8 grade charter school in Kansas City, Missouri where she coached teachers on instructional practices and using data to drive their instruction in the classroom. In 2011, Katie began working with TNTP, supporting the state's transition to Rhode Island's new educator evaluation system under a Race to the Top grant. In her role she supported teachers, administrators, and district leadership with all aspects of training and implementation of the new system. During her time working on educator evaluation, she realized she missed working directly with teachers, students, and families as part of a school team. In the fall of 2013, Katie began working in her current role as Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at Excel Academy Orient Heights, which is Excel's third and newest middle school.
