John Gallaugher, PhD

John Gallaugher is an Associate Professor of Information Systems at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management. A dedicated teacher and active researcher, Prof. Gallaugher has been recognized for excellence and innovation in teaching by Boston College, BusinessWeek, Entrepreneur Magazine, the Decision Sciences Institute, Beta Gamma Sigma (the business honor society), and The Heights (BC’s student newspaper). He was also selected as the featured faculty profiled in the nationally televised Boston College public service announcement, which ran during the 2009-2010 sports season. Prof. Gallaugher’s research has been published in the Harvard Business Review, MIS Quarterly and other leading IS journals. He is also author of the widely-adopted open textbook Information Systems: A Manager’s Guide to Harnessing Technology. Prof. Gallaugher has been a featured speaker at Apple Inc’s AcademiX educator conference, and was the keynote speaker at AIBUMA (the African International Business and Management Conference) in Nairobi Kenya. Prof. Gallaugher has consulted to and taught executive seminars for several organizations including Accenture, Alcoa, Duke Corporate Education, ING, Partners Healthcare, Staples, State Street, the University of Ulster, and the U.S. Information Agency. His comments on business and technology have appeared in The New York Times, National Public Radio, BusinessWeek, The Boston Globe, Wired, the Associated Press, Chronicle (WCVB-TV), The Daily Yomiuri (Japan) and The Nation (Thailand), among others.
Professor Gallaugher’s courses and research focus on strategy, technology, and social media. He has co-led the MBA program’s international field study courses to Europe and Asia, and he coordinates both the graduate and undergraduate TechTrek West field studies. He is also the faculty advisor for the Information Systems Academy, the Graduate TechClub, BC Splash, and is co-advisor to the student-run Boston College Venture Competition. Professor Gallaugher earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the Syracuse University School of Management, and he holds an MBA and an undergraduate degree in computer science, both from Boston College.
