Krissy Returns to EagleEyes

winter 2007 newsletter

From age 11 to age 22, Krissy Zitola spent a great deal of her days at Boston College's Campus School where she learned to use EagleEyes and became very adept at it. Krissy has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. She can move her head and arms with limited control, but can move her eyes with ease. She was a perfect candidate for EagleEyes, because she is a smart and energized person. Krissy's accomplishments at the Campus School included using EagleEyes to complete an online course at Barnes and Noble University on "How to predict the Oscars," and painting note cards with EagleEyes's Paint program. These cards were sold for charity to support children in Afghanistan in 2001.

At age 22, under state law, Krissy left the Campus School. "It was a very sad time," recalls her mother, Debbie Zitola. Krissy had many friends at Boston College, including Michael Nash. "BC was a part of Krissy's family, and it was so difficult for h er to leave there. Krissy loved BC and everyone there loved her too."

Krissy's mother luckily found a program, at Shore Collaborative in Wakefield, MA, where Krissy could thrive. In 2001, Shore did not have the EagleEyes technology. When Debbie Inkley, Executive Director of the Opportunity Foundation of America, found wher e Krissy had gone after BC, OFOA gifted Shore with an EagleEyes system this summer. Shore Collaborative also obtained a Camera Mouse system. Krissy has been using both technologies almost equally. It's great to have Krissy back after a five year hiatus.

Krissy has an affinity for slapstick comedy and hates to be away from her "gossip circle" at Shore. "She loves humor, especially when someone trips and falls or something," says her mother. "She's very bright too. She helps me find my keys sometimes when I've lost them by gesturing or staring at them."

Krissy spends much of her time at Shore in her group's room listening to the day's happenings. Krissy spends about 30 minutes on EagleEyes before she misses her group's antics too much and demands to be taken back. Scotty, one of her good friends at Shore, ensures that Krissy is filled in on any juicy tidbit s that she's missed while away from her room.

Krissy's time spent with EagleEyes will increase in coming weeks because the new staff at Shore just received training on how to use EagleEyes. Krissy can only improve at using the technology, and will surely add more programs to her EagleEyes arsenal soon.

Krissy celebrated her 27th birthday on December 14th, and her mom baked her a cake. The next day, Shore threw their annual Christmas party, and all were in attendance, including Krissy and Scotty. Here's to more celebrations for Krissy and more accomplishments for her with the EagleEyes program.
