Concentrations
undergraduate concentration
Regardless of your concentration, we expect finance majors to have understanding in the following areas:
- major investment, financing and governance decisions (e.g., capital structure, merger and acquisitions, dividend, board of directors, etc) of corporations;
- the risk and return tradeoffs in investment and know how to evaluate basic financial products (e.g., stocks, bonds and derivatives);
- the role of financial institutions/intermediaries (e.g., investment and commercial banks, asset management companies) in the financial system;
- the role of financial markets in the economy and the need for efficient regulations.
The undergraduate finance concentration requires successful completion of Basic Finance plus a minimum of four (4) additional finance courses.
Of these additional courses, three (3) are required* and are common to all concentrators; the other course or courses are elective, based upon personal interest or career goals. The student's minimum finance curriculum follows:
MA 021 - Financial Accounting (pre-requisite for Basic Finance)
MF 021 - Basic Finance
- *MF 151 - Investments (pre-requisite: MF021)
- *MF 127 - Corporate Finance (pre-requisite: MF021)
- *MF 225 - Financial Policy (pre-requisite: MF127, co-requisite or previously taken MF151)
- At least one elective from any finance course (MF) offered outside of the required courses for a finance concentration. MA351 (Financial Statement Analysis) can also be counted as a Finance elective. MF600 senior level electives require senior status and permission from the Department.
