Arrival, Assembly, Procession
All graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences should report to the middle campus, Linden Lane, by 8:30 a.m.
Guests should be seated in Alumni Stadium by 9:30 a.m., when the academic procession is scheduled to begin. During the main ceremony in Alumni Stadium the A&S graduates will be seated between the 40 yard lines. The academic procession enters from both the south (Merkert) and west (Forum) sides of Alumni Stadium. Graduates from A&S will process in front of the west stands and down the center aisle. The President and dignitaries process in front of the west stands and down the center aisle. The ceremony begins when all members of the President’s party have reached the stage.
After the main ceremony in Alumni Stadium, graduates and guests should remain in the Stadium for the formal A&S diploma distribution, which will last approximately 90 minutes. At the end of the main ceremony, and after the announcement to do so, A&S graduates should reseat themselves, as directed in their assigned alphabetized seats. A card with the graduate’s name will be placed on each seat. Guests should be seated in the Stadium stands or in the rear section of the field seats. Only graduates will be allowed on the front section of the field seats. Students will be seated alphabetically beginning in the right-hand section facing the stage.
Graduates should bring the seat card with them to the stage, then hand the card to the faculty marshal as you approach the stage. Approach the stage in a single line from the right as directed by the marshals. As the marshal announces your name, proceed across the stage and receive a congratulatory handshake from the Dean. As you exit the ramp proceed down the ramp to the table where a marshal will give you an envelope with your diploma. Proceed back to your seat as directed by the marshals. Students must remain in their seat until all diplomas are distributed.
Note: Graduates who have not fulfilled the academic requirements for their degree or have not satisfied financial obligations to the University will not receive a signed diploma.
Commencement is an academic ceremony and only academic garb is appropriate. Students wearing any other form of apparel or uniform will not be allowed on the stage.
