Exchange program with the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris, France
Each year, a Boston College Graduate student is granted the position of pensionnaire étranger at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. Founded in 1794, and located in the heart of the Latin Quarter (on the rue d’Ulm), the ENS at Ulm is the single most prestigious institution of higher learning in France. This position entails free lodging in one of the campuses of the Ecole, free access to classes and seminars, academic advising by distinguished ENS professors, and library privileges at one of the best libraries in Paris. As the position carries no stipend, students selected for the program are encouraged to apply to grants or fellowships to help finance their year in Paris. They may also request a teaching assistantship from the French Ministry of Education. This position provides a monthly stipend in exchange for teaching English conversation.
The exchange program with the ENS is open to all Boston College graduate students, although priority will be granted to students in Romance Languages and Literatures, and in general to those who can demonstrate that they intend to make the most out of this intellectual and academic experience. Students wishing to be considered this program are invited to send a statement of interest to Franco Mormando, Coordinator of the Program by December 15 for the following academic year.

Thanks to a special formal arrangement with the government of the region of Lombardy, Italy, Boston College is pleased to be able to send each year one student to work as English-language assistant in the schools of the towns and cities of the region (excluding Milan). The program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students who apply must first secure nomination from the Italian section of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.
Assistants are paid a stipend (though not one sufficient to meet all expenses of one's stay in Italy). The assistantship can last anywhere from three months to a full (Italian) academic year (from October through May). Applications are usually available by late March.

The Apprenticeship in College Teaching
Graduate students in Romance Languages and Literatures are invited to participate in BC’s new Apprenticeship in College Teaching Program. The program coordinates and formalizes efforts that have long been under way in departments and in the university to prepare graduate students for teaching at Boston College and in their future careers. By combining these efforts, the Apprenticeship Program provides graduate students with a framework within which they can deliberately plan their development as teaching scholars. Students who complete the program will receive a letter from the Office of the Provost for inclusion in their teaching portfolios.
