Nature and Purpose
Project Bread, sponsor of the annual Walk for Hunger, is dedicated to alleviating hunger for those in crisis and is working on long-term solutions to end hunger. The FoodSource Hotline is the direct service arm of the agency offering immediate assistance to those who are in desperate need of food. Each month, Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline connects over 2500 callers to food resources.
Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline provides exciting opportunities for PULSE students. We are looking for students who enjoy a challenge, are caring, eager to learn, and willing to be an active participant in their placement. Students will be working side by side with our staff providing callers in need with information on short and long term solutions to their current situations. Examples of knowledge students will gain through their placement are: the state and federal food stamp regulations, enabling students to screen callers for eligibility in the food stamp program and the process and operation of emergency food programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, and low cost food programs.
Project Bread's FoodSource Hotline will provide the following additional experience through this placement:
- Visits to food pantries.
- Eat for a week on a food stamp budget and examine what lifestyle changes and social stigmas living on a fixed budget can produce.
- Assist with preparations for Project Bread's annual Walk For Hunger which raises money to help fund emergency food resources throughout Massachusetts.
The 10-12 hour per week commitment can be met from 8:00 to 5:00PM Monday through Friday.
Students will work closely with the professional FoodSource Hotline staff. Ongoing training will be provided in areas including the emergency feeding network, state food stamp eligibility requirements, general welfare programs, and other available resources for low-income individuals. Students will have daily access to their supervisor and are encouraged to openly discuss their experiences with staff and the supervisor. This position will provide challenge and insight as well as be an opportunity for personal growth.
