MSPCC Kid's Day Therapeutic Program

Nature and Purpose
MSPCC is a private, nonprofit society with a legacy of strengthening families and preventing child abuse through essential child welfare and mental health treatment and effective public advocacy.  Incorporated in 1878, MSPCC serves children and families across Massachusetts with an unmatched range of services designed to respond to the individual needs of infants, children, adolescents and their families.  We operate by these core principles:

  • Children deserve to be safe and happy.
  • Children grow up best in families.

The Kid's Day Therapeutic After School Program is committed to providing a safe, structured, and nurturing environment to children ages 5-12.  The program is open 2-6 pm during the school year and 8am-6pm during school vacations and summer.  The program focuses on the emotional and social well being of the whole child by providing and modeling therapeutic interventions and coping skills.  Program highlights include:

  • Outside time/exercise
  • Homework/literacy time incorporated as part of the daily schedule both during the school year and the summer
  • Age appropriate activities that engage children and develop self-esteem.

Tasks
Students will be expected to engage with children and be proactive about participating in activities such as outside time, art projects, computers, reading, and general conversation.  A very important role for PULSE students in our program is to assist during homework time.  Many of our children require 1:1 assistance during this time.  PULSE students will also be very involved during our structured daily activity period, which includes therapeutic and academic activities.  PULSE students are expected to help to maintain a nurturing, consistent, safe environment for our children.

Time Requirements
Students are expected to be at the after school program two afternoons per week for a minimum of 8 hours per week.  Shifts are approximately 2:00pm-6:00pm.

Supervision
Each student will be supervised directly by the Intern Superviser and will also receive guidance and feedback from the program's Group Leaders.
