BHCC: Volunteer Tutoring Program
(Chelsea Campus of Bunker Hill CC)

Nature and Purpose

The Volunteer Tutoring Program at Bunker Hill Community College in Chelsea is committed to providing one on one supplemental English language instruction to students enrolled in the Adult Basic Education Program at Bunker Hill Community College and at satellite locations.

Tasks

Volunteer tutors will provide one on one tutoring to immigrant students in need of English language instruction outside of classroom time.  This opportunity allows students to be at ease in an intimate setting that will allow them to further develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.  Students who often receive tutoring find that they are more confident in their language skills and develop a commitment and interest in pursuing educational advancement.

The Volunteer Tutoring Program welcomes all who have a passion for education and a desire to be part of new comer’s academic success.

Time Requirements

Pulse students are required to tutor twice a week for eight hours in two four-hour shifts.  The shifts are the following:  Mon & Wed or Tue & Thu 4:00pm-6:00pm & 6:00pm-8:00pm.  Pulse students are also required to make a commitment for two semesters.  A mandatory training is required prior to the commencement of service.

Supervision

Training, scheduling and overall supervision will be provided by the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator.  Pulse students will be given an orientation and training prior to the beginning of service.
