Chair

The Department Chair is elected by the Department and approved by the administration for a three-year renewable term. The Chair is responsible for, among other things:

  • Committee assignments (summer for following year).
  • Teaching assignments, including requesting new courses from faculty, and allocating teaching loads and size of classes, in conjunction with the Teaching Committee (fall for following year).
  • Requesting new faculty positions from the administration (late fall, early winter for following year).
  • Negotiating with new hires with the administration (fall and winter).
  • Yearly faculty evaluations and recommendations to dean for faculty increments (fall).
  • Negotiating changes in our undergraduate or graduate program with the Educational Policy/Graduate Educational Policy Committee.
  • Requesting departmental budget from the university (late fall for following year).
  • Hiring part-time faculty (winter for following year).
  • Supervision and evaluation of office staff.

Undergraduate Program Director

The Undergraduate Program Director is appointed by the Chair and is responsible for, among other things:

  • Evaluating all student requests for course substitutions for Major or Core requirements, including credit for Advanced Placement, Junior Year Abroad, summer school, and courses taken in other departments. Dealing with all problems concerning Degree Audits.
  • Chairing the Undergraduate Program Committee with responsibility for oversight of the undergraduate curriculum including approval of all new courses and programs and interacting with the University EPC when necessary.
  • Annual preparation of copy for the University Catalog, Academic Advising Handbook, Summer Orientation Handbook, and Department Website for all undergraduate material.
  • Overseeing transfer students, including evaluation of transfer credit, conducting transfer student orientation twice a year, and transfer student advisement.
  • Overseeing undergraduate advisement, including assignment of advising duties to faculty (through Psychology Office), providing advisement tutorial for new faculty, and continual interaction with the Advising Center.
  • Taking responsibility for all changes in the content or structure of the undergraduate program, such as the conversion to credit hours.
  • Preparing teaching report for third year and tenure reviews.
  • Serving as contact person for undergraduate admissions, including three presentations annually at Admitted Students Day, meeting with prospective students when requested, and responding to all correspondence from prospective students.
  • Overseeing student course evaluations including annual designation of courses for evaluation.
  • Evaluating requests from students from the other Boston College schools for internal transfer to A&S as Psychology majors.
  • Serving as contact person on undergraduate matters for people outside the Department, including the Administration, other universities, and parents.
  • Overseeing the Department’s nominations for Dean’s Scholars and Sophomore Scholars and attending Scholars award ceremony.
  • Overseeing the Department’s Senior Thesis.
  • Consulting with the Chair concerning annual course offerings.
  • Serving as referral (from other faculty and the Department office) person for all undergraduate matters.
  • Preparing all requested reports on undergraduate matters.

Graduate Program Director

The Graduate Program Director (GPD) is appointed by the Chair. Working in conjunction with the office, the GPD is responsible for, among other things:

  • Running an orientation meeting for incoming students along with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Graduate School of the Arts and Sciences (Candace Hetzner).
  • Chairing the Graduate Program Committee.
  • Chairing the Graduate Evaluation Committee. This includes overseeing the nomination of students for various awards.
  • Either chairing the Graduate Admissions Committee or staying in close touch with the chair of this committee.
  • Meeting with graduate students each fall to map out plans for the year, and then twice more during the year to make sure things are on track.
  • Making sure that all students have applied for external funding.
  • Making arrangements for student summer support.
  • Maintaining and revising the Graduate Program Handbook.
  • Working with the office to maintain a graduate student database.

Statistical Consulting

The Statistical Consulting Committee provides help to faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows on statistical matters.
