Major Requirements

undergraduate program

Physics B.S. majors are required to complete coursework in physics as well as co-requisite coursework in mathematics and an additional approved science.

Among these courses, the following ten are required:

PH209 (or PH211*) & 203 Introductory Physics I with Lab PH210 (or PH212*) & 204 Introductory Physics II with Lab
PH301 Wave and Vibrations with Lab PH303 Intro to Modern Physics
PH401 Mechanics
PH402 Electricity and Magnetism
PH407 Quantum Physics I
PH408 Quantum Physics II
PH409 Contemporary Electronics Lab
PH420 Statistical Mechanics & Thermodynamics

*Physics majors are strongly recommended to take the PH209-210 sequence. PH211-12 is typically for Biology, Pre-med, and students fulfilling science requirements.

Choose one of the following:

PH535 Experiments in Physics
PH430 Computing in Physics*
PH532 Senior Thesis**
HP299 Honors Program Thesis***

*PH430 requires the prerequisite, CS127 Introduction to Scientific Computation. **Senior Thesis is recommended for students planning graduate work in Physics. *** For students in A&S Honors program doing a Physics Thesis.

Choose at least two elective courses (course offerings vary from year to year):

PH412 Nuclei and Particles
PH425 Condensed Matter Physics
PH440 Applied Fluid Mechanics
PH441 Optics
PH480 Intro. to Mathematical Physics
PH510 Stellar Astrophysics
PH515 Semiconductor Devices and Lasers
PH525 Plasma Physics
PH540 Cosmology and Astrophysics
PH545 Intro. Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics
PH548 Physics of Nanomaterials

The following mathematics courses are required:

MT102 Calculus I
MT305 Advanced Calculus*
MT103 Calculus II or MT105 Calculus II AP
MT202 Multivariable Calculus

*Students entering with Math AP Placement are advised to substitute MT305 with both Linear Algebra (MT210) and Differential Equations (MT410)

The final requirement is two approved courses in a science other than physics, normally CH 109-110 General Chemistry along with the associated laboratories.

Choose two additional science courses with lab:

CH109 & 111 General Chemistry I with Lab
CH110 & 112 General Chemistry II with Lab
Other Approved Science I with Lab
Other Approved Science II with Lab
