Welcome Freshman
Letter to Students Interested in Performance
May 2013
To: Prospective music students at BC
From: Sandra Hebert, Director of Chamber Music
Re: Performance opportunities at BC
First let me add to the chorus that I'm sure you've already heard many times, "Welcome to BC!" This letter is to let you know about some of the performance activities we have in the Music Department. You are receiving this letter because you indicated on your form that you had participated in music in the past. If you do not plan to be involved in music at BC right now, please disregard this letter.
However, if you are interested, read on! There will be important informational meetings held in the coming days at which you can meet music faculty and students and get more details about what is available, audition requirements, etc. If you are not sure if you want to participate or in which group(s), you aren't committing yourself by coming, but you may find it helpful to hear more about our program, and what we offer. If you are interested in taking instrumental or vocal lessons, there will be information about these as well.
Meetings will be posted here in late August. Please check back here when you arrive on campus next fall.
In brief, we have two large ensembles - the BC Symphony Orchestra and the BC Chorale. For singers, in addition to Chorale, we have vocal chamber music (a number of small ensembles, usually one or two voices to a part), and opera workshop. For instrumentalists, we have classical chamber music, cello ensemble, flute choir and piano ensemble. In the spring semester, we have BC Baroque, a baroque ensemble for strings. We also offer evening classes in Irish fiddle and tin whistle, a Popular Styles Ensemble and three levels of improvisation.
Private lessons are available both for credit and non-credit in all major instruments and voice. You may sign up online from the link on the Music Department home page (bc.edu/music). The deadline for signing up is the end of the drop/add period, Wednesday, September 11.
I look forward to meeting many of you over the next week and a half. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Sandra Hebert
