Performing groups at Boston College by category. The Music Department is just one of a number of sponsors for performing groups, such as The Bands Program, The Irish Studies Program, and Office of the Dean of Student Development (ODSD).

INSTRUMENTAL

 

Boston College Symphony Orchestra

John Finney, Director
An organization of 40-60 players dedicated to music of the symphonic repertoire, open to all members of Boston College and the surrounding community. Rehearsals are on Monday 6:30-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday 6:00-7:30 p.m.

Boston College Chamber Music Society

Sandra Hebert, Director
An organization devoted to the enjoyment of making music in small ensembles. Students of similar ability are matched to form groups, get music, rehearse, and receive coaching. Organizational meeting during second week of classes. Opportunities to play in  concerts. Sign-up sheet posted outside Lyons 426. Music department 617-552-4843.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is open to interested members of the community to perform original works for combined woodwinds, brass and percussion and transcriptions from the orchestral repertoire. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

University Wind Ensemble and Chamber Ensembles

The University Wind Ensemble is a select group of undergraduate student performers, determined by competitive auditions to play wind literature of the highest quality. The Ensemble also sponsors woodwind, brass and percussion groups of varying sizes. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

Boston College Flute Choir

An ensemble devoted solely to music for multiple flutes. Meets once a week with the director. Public performances on and off campus. Music department 617-552-4843.

Irish Traditional Music Ensemble

Seamus Connolly, Director
Weekly lessons in the Irish fiddle, tin whistle, and in Irish dancing, along with a monthly Ceili or tune-swap for all instruments. Fiddle and tin whistle meet Tuesday evenings, Irish dancing Wednesday afternoons. Call 617-552-3716.

Boston College Marching Band

The dynamic 'Screaming Eagles' band consists of over 180 students as instrumentalists, color guard, and managerial staff for performance at halftime shows, in the stands and at special events. All interested students are invited to join. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

Pep Band

Supports the basketball and hockey teams during the winter months, including the Big East and Hockey East tournaments, both here and out of state. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

Jazz Lab Band

This ensemble serves as an alternative to BC bOp! for those students who wish to play in a jazz big band. Rehearsals are on Mondays from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

Popular Styles Ensemble

Jazz, rock, fusion, funk. Meet with like-minded musicians for coaching and improvisation. Music department 617-552-4843.

Improvisation

Eric Kniffin, Director
A series of graded levels of guided instruction in improvisation in blues and jazz idioms. Meets Monday evenings. Music department 617-552-4843.

B.C.bOp!

Sebastian Bonaiuto, Director
A 25-member ensemble dedicated to instrumental and vocal jazz performance. Rehearsals are in the Conte Forum Band Room on Monday and Wednesdays 4:15-6:30 p.m., plus one additional night. Performances throughout the semester both at B.C. and away. Open instrumental auditions will be held in September. Bands Program 617-552-3018.

Liturgy Arts Group

Meyer Chambers, Director
As part of Campus Ministry, LAG provides music for services on campus and special events. Vocalists and instrumentalists perform a wide repertoire of music. Call 617-552-1398.

Boston Collegium

A mixed vocal and instrumental ensemble devoted to music from the Middle Ages through the Classical period in historically informed performances. Music department 617-552-4843.

Voices

University Chorale

150 voice mixed chorus dedicated to performing the finest choral music of both classical and contemporary composers. Auditions during the first week of classes; rehearsals on Monday (women) Tuesday (men) and Thursday (all) from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Chorale office 617-552-4306.

Voices of Imani

The Boston College Gospel Choir, with membership open to the entire Boston College Community. Rehearsals begin the second week of school. Email African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) or call 617-552-3238.

Madrigal Singers

The Madrigal Singers perform religious and secular songs from the Renaissance period, dressed in traditional attire. At Christmastime, they can be heard singing carols around campus. Contact Student Programs or Email bcmadrigals@yahoo.com.

A Cappella

Shaan

B.C.'s premier South Asian A Capella group, founded in the fall of 2010.  The only South Asian musical gropu on campus, Shaan strives to expose the greater Boston College community to an entirely different style of music that merges traditional South Asian sounds, rhythms, and styles with more modern songs and styles.  Email: bostoncollegeshaan.gmail.com

Acoustics

A mixed voice a cappella group performing contemporary music. The group performs shows around the campus and the city throughout the year. Email acoustics@bc.edu

B.E.A.T.S.

Black Experience in America Through Song (B.E.A.T.S.) is BC's only R&B and Soul a cappella group.

B.C. Sharps

Boston College's only all-female a cappella group combine their creative vocal stylings with a unique brand of humor. 

Bostonians

A 16-20 mixed-voice a cappella group dedicated to music for fun. The group performs shows for campus and community.

Dynamics

BC's youngest pop a cappella group was founded in the fall of 1998. Auditions are held for the mixed-voices group in the fall and spring.

Heightsmen

B.C.'s only all-male a cappella group established in 1990. Their repertoire includes jazz, pop, rock, R&B, disco and other genres.

A student-run club that organizes practice space, concerts and musician contacts for student musicians in pop, jazz, rock, etc.
