# M.A. Program

This information applies only to students currently enrolled in the M.A. program. No new students are being admitted to this program.

#### General Description

We offer a flexible M.A. program for students wishing to study mathematics at an advanced level. Beyond the common core of five required courses described below, students may elect courses according to their individual interests.

Courses are available in both pure and applied areas for students wanting to broaden their background for entrance to a doctoral program or before seeking employment in government, industry, or education.

In particular, pure mathematics courses are offered each year in real analysis, complex analysis, and algebra. Courses in logic are offered every two or three years. In applied areas, courses to meet specific needs are provided, including MT850 Methods of Applied Mathematics.

For a student interested in a career in actuarial mathematics, the Department offers courses in probability and statistics, numerical analysis, and mathematical programming (operations research), together with occasional offerings of MT851 Stochastic Processes and MT853 Topics in Modern Statistics.

Students interested in computer science may consider courses offered by the Computer Science Department of the Carroll School of Management, at the level of Computer Science II and higher.

Program Requirements for the M.A. Degree The M.A. degree requires completion of 30 credit hours of courses (ten courses) in the Department, and participation in a three-credit seminar (MT903). Under special circumstances, and with the approval of the Graduate Committee and the Assistant Chair for Graduate Programs, a student may satisfy the degree requirements with 27 credit hours of courses (nine courses), and a thesis (six credit hours).

Among the ten courses used for graduation, students are required to include (or have the equivalent of):

- MT804-MT805 Analysis I-II;
- MT816-817 Modern Algebra I-II;
- MT814 Complex Variables I; and
- one additional course at the level of 800 or higher.

All students must pass a written comprehensive examination in analysis and algebra, based on the MT804-805 Analysis and MT816-817 Algebra courses.

Subject to approval of the Graduate Committee, a student may receive credit for the following undergraduate courses

- MT412 Partial Differential Equations
- MT414 Numerical Analysis
- MT426 Probability
- MT427 Mathematical Statistics
- MT430 Number Theory
- MT435-436 Linear Programming I-II
- MT440 Dynamical Systems
- MT445 Applied Combinatorics
- MT451 Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry
- MT470 Mathematical Modeling
- Computer Science major courses beyond Computer Science I (at most two such courses).

However, students may be required to do extra work in these courses in order to earn graduate credit. Beyond the ten courses used to satisfy the degree requirements, students may take some additional courses in or outside the Department.

Each graduate student should consult with the Assistant Chair for Graduate Programs to develop a program suitable for his or her needs. Final approval for each student's program is granted by the Assistant Chair for Graduates.

Notes for Students Interested in a Teaching Career

Students interested in a teaching career at the secondary level should be aware that because of certification requirements, unless approved equivalents have been taken previously, their course work should include the following:

- MT451 Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry
- MT426 Probability
- MT427 Mathematical Statistics
- Some exposure to the use of computers in mathematics, in courses such as Scientific Computing.
