Alambrista — The Director's Cut (USA)

Young; After the birth of his first child in a small Mexican town, Roberto (Domingo Ambriz) decides to go to the United States and work for a period of time in order to give his son a good life. He successfully crosses the border with the help of some friends and works in a variety of field jobs. He meets new friends, who all change him in some way, from his first real friend in the U.S. to his American waitress girlfriend. In one of his jobs, he finds his father, who had left his family years ago to find work in the U.S. When Roberto later finds him dead due to the exhaustion of overworking in the fields, he acknowledges the misery of the immigrant lifestyle and decides to go back to Mexico to be with his wife and child. Las cartas de Alou (Spain)
Region 2 (PAL) DVD of 1990 award-winning (Goya and others) film directed by Montxo Armendáriz dealing with the never-ending immigration issues that face Spain. Alou (Mulie Jarju), a young African man, decides to go to Spain to make money to send to his family in Africa. He learns to face all the issues (discrimination, cultural shock, and countless other obstacles) that illegal immigrants encounter when they come to a new country. He learns Spanish and is able to make a living by befriending other immigrants similar to himself and even falling in love with the daughter (Eulalia Ramón) of a Spanish man who owns a bar in the city where he worked. Alou writes colorful and positive letters to his parents in Africa, giving them details about his life in Spain. The letters give Alou a voice in a country where he is silenced. El Cid (USA)
Region 1 (NTSC) DVD of 1961 film by Anthony Mann; This epic film tells the tale of the legendary Spanish hero Rodrigo, dubbed el Cid (Charlton Heston). At the time (11th century), Spain is divided amongst Christians and Muslims into various small kingdoms. In his quest to unite Spain, Rodrigo shows kindness and mercy to emirs, but is considered treasonous by Count Gomez de Gormaz (Andrew Cruickshank), the father of Rodrigo’s fiancée Jimena (Sophia Lorena). After her father dies as the result of a duel with Rodrigo, Jimena vows to avenge her father’s death, but realizes she cannot because of her eternal love for Rodrigo. Before becoming the beloved leader of Valencia and the hero of Spain, Rodrigo is exiled, and his wife Jimena and children are arrested.
