If you have any questions about the application process or you would like to check on the completeness of your application, you should contact the History Department directly by calling 617-552-3781 or emailing Rebecca Rea, Graduate Programs Assistant (rebecca.rea.1@bc.edu).

In order to help with the admissions process, please take a look at Frequently Asked Questions about the History Graduate Programs.

In considering your application, the Graduate Admissions Committee looks for excellence across the board. We consider the following parts of your application:

  • a Statement of Purpose (one or two pages) emphasizing your intellectual interests and your reasons for choosing Boston College
  • official undergraduate and graduate transcripts
  • GRE general scores taken within the last five years
  • at least three letters of recommendation
  • a writing sample (ten or fifteen pages only) of a paper written for a recent course, or one written expressly for the application
  • application forms, which can be found on the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences website

Admissions deadlines are January 2, 2012 for our Ph.D. program and February 1, 2012 for the MA program.

Funding

Admission to the History Ph.D. program at Boston College is highly competitive, but our program guarantees five years of funding to all incoming Ph.D. students. This means that our Ph.D. students receive tuition remission as well as a stipend. This funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance and progress towards the degree. Furthermore, our Ph.D. students serve as Teaching Assistants in the History Department, beginning in their second year of graduate study.

We wish you the best as you begin the admissions process, and we appreciate your consideration of Boston College.
