Language Proficiency Requirement

Students may fulfill the German language proficiency requirement by:

  • completing the fourth semester of language instruction Intermediate German II (GERM 1051)
  • taking any of the following courses:
    • GERM 2201 German Composition & Conversation I
    • GERM 2202 German Composition & Conversation 2
    • GERM 2210 History of German Literature I
    • GERM 2211 History of German Literature II
    • GERM 1175 Business German
  • earning any of the following: a 550 on the SAT II, a three on the AP test, a score of six or seven on the IB HL exam, A level in the GCE, or
  • passing the department's proficiency examination given at the beginning of each semester. The next proficiency exam is scheduled for September 2015 in Lyons 201E, or students can make individual appointments by calling the German department at 617-552-3740. Students passing these exams who wish to continue their studies in German should sign up for GERM 2201. Students with GCE AS level should sign up for GERM 1050.
