Language Proficiency Requirement

Students may fulfill the German language proficiency requirement by:

  • completing the fourth semester of language instruction Intermediate German II (GM 051)
  • taking any of the following courses:
    • GM 201 German Composition & Conversation I
    • GM 202 German Composition & Conversation 2
    • GM 210 History of German Literature I
    • GM 211 History of German Literature II
    • GM 175 Business German
  • earning any of the following: a 550 on the SAT II, a three on the AP test, a score of six or seven on the IB HL exam, A level in the GCE, or
  • passing the department's proficiency examination given at the beginning of each semester. The next proficiency exam is scheduled for September 13, 2011 at 4:30 pm in Lyons 201E, or students can make individual appointments by calling the German Department at 617-552-3740. Students passing these exams who wish to continue their studies in German should sign up for GM 201. Students with GCE AS level should sign up for GM 050.
