Minor

east european studies

The minor in East European Studies is an interdisciplinary minor, currently under the direction of Professor Cynthia Simmons of the Department of Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures. Interested students should email the Director cynthia.simmons@bc.edu to discuss a plan for fulfilling the minor and to verify with the Director, prior to graduation, that the course plan has been satisfied.

The language requirement is usually satisfied with courses in either Russian or Bulgarian, which are offered in the Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures or in Boston College study-abroad programs in Russia, Bulgaria, or Poland. Intermediate-level proficiency, the equivalent of two years of language training at the college level, can be achieved in other East European languages as well, through external institutions or programs. Certification must be submitted to the Director or arrangements must be made for proficiency testing at BC.

Students can satisfy other requirements for the minor in various BC departments. Introductory courses for the minor are offered in the Slavic & Eastern Languages and Literatures, as well as other relevant lecture courses. The Director can advise students with regard to relevant courses in the history and political science departments to satisfy the one-course requirement in East European history or politics.
