The Communication Department began presenting student writing awards in 1998. Over time, the writing awards have been expanded to include other forms of scholarship.

The department issues a call for submissions each April and students are allowed to submit work in four different categories: academic writing, writing for the print media, production projects, and design projects. A committee of faculty members reviews the work and determines how many students will be recognized in any given year.
