General Information:
The Boston College Educational Seismology Project (BC-ESP) is offering a unique opportunity for adults to learn all about seismology and other aspects of Earth Science, and to experience the world of scientific research through a series of evening or weekend workshops at Weston Observatory. The BC-ESP team of seismologists and instructors is led by BC Professor Alan Kafka. This program uses seismology as a medium for inviting people into the world of science research through inquiry-based learning by investigation of earthquakes recorded by seismographs.
Presentations by BC-ESP seismologists, as well as hands-on exercises, engage participants in learning not only about seismology and earthquakes, but also about geology, plate tectonics, volcanoes, mountain building, and many other aspects of the Earth and environmental sciences. Furthermore, our BC-ESP workshops teach aspects of physics, such as energy, mechanics, and waves, encouraging a culture of inquiry in science, technology and mathematics. Participants learn how to operate seismographs and analyze real ground motion data being recorded by BC-ESP seismographs.
