Facilities

Boston College boasts several pieces of specialized equipment and facilities where innovation is often the result of research.


The Mass Spectrometry Center

  1. Available for external use by arrangement made directly through the Mass Spectrometry Center
  2. Provides a wide range of state-of-the-art mass spectrometers and chromatographic systems

     

The Integrated Sciences Clean Room and Nanofabrication Facility

  1. Available for external use by arrangement made directly through the Integrated Sciences Clean Room and Nanofabrication Facility
  2. Comprised of 1,500 sq. ft. of Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 clean room space, with an additional 2,000 sq. ft. of service and support area space
  3. Located within the laboratory that is supported by a 10,000 CFM Air Handling Unit the room temperature is maintained between 65-70 degrees F and the Relative Humidity is kept between 45-55 %
  4. A 200 gallon Deionized Water System delivers 18.2 Mega-ohm water to the facility
  5. Home to over 30 high-end micro and nanoscale instrumentation systems,
  6. the laboratory enables highly sensitive materials and devices to be fabricated free from contaminants, such as common airborne particles that are often larger in size than the scientific devices being constructed.
  7. The facility brings together Boston College faculty, visiting faculty, post-docs, graduate students, undergraduate students and industrial partners from a variety of disciplines into collaborative Integrated Science research within the realms of micro- and nanotechnology.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center

  1. A high-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer facility featuring:
    1. two 400 MHz NMR spectrometers, with auto sampling capability
    2. two 500 MHz NMR spectrometers
    3. one 600 MHz NMR spectrometer for biological chemistry
    4. related computer facilities

       

X-ray Crystallography Center

  1. Facility accepts sample submissions from other departments within the university and from research organizations outside the university
    1. Turn around time dependent on crystal quality and size
  2. Fully renovated in 2007
  3. Provides X-ray diffraction tools for structural characterization of both small molecules (organic, inorganic and organometallic) and macromolecules.Facility contains two single-crystal X-ray diffraction systems:
    1. Bruker APEX CCD diffractometer
    2. Rigaku HighFlux Homelab diffractometer

       

Animal Care Facility

  1. Provides humane care for animals while assisting researchers
  2. Services include
    1. Procuring animals
    2. Animal husbandry
    3. Daily health surveillance
    4. Equipment provision
    5. Maintenance
    6. Training
