Part-Time Work: Flexible Option or Underemployment—Fact Sheet

August 2010—The majority of older part-time workers prefer the flexibility of part-time employment, yet involuntary part-time work presents older workers with losses of income, as well as lack of health and retirement benefits.

Findings include:

  • Workers aged 55+ are more likely to be employed part-time (28%) than their younger counterparts (18% of those aged 25-54);
  • In December 2009, over 1.4 million older workers were working part-time because they had no choice;
  • Of those working part-time, 22% would prefer full-time employment; and
  • 30% of part-time workers who are primary wage earners lived below the federal poverty line during 2007.

At the same time, employers are offering flexible schedules for employee retention to ease the brain drain. Fully 90% of non-profits, for example, offer part-time work.
